A laboratory of the possibilities, the << nice gallery >> would like to convey an authentic experience in virtual environments using three exhibitions as examples. Exciting ? At least challenging ! Our “lab stay” from May 2021 to August 2022 focused on the overall arrangement of virtual spaces, the linked possibilities of users (motion, viewpoint, interaction), and experimental features that will be further developed in subsequent projects. Using three virtual exhibitions as examples, the nice gallery aims to create an experience that is as authentic as possible: without apps, without plugins, “Internet only”. This puts the focus on the users, in particular they are “picked up where they usually are”, namely on the Internet. Therefore, access barriers, such as plugins or the like, were dispensed with. However, the WebGL standard for the transmission of three-dimensional content in web browsers (Web Graphics Library) does not yet offer all the possibilities that are available offline. But nonetheless quite a few.

Users can move around the exhibition spaces completely freely and interact with their surroundings from a “first-person” perspective. It is therefore particularly exciting to see how the overall arrangement of “space and art” is experienced by the respective visitors. Due to the (moving) picture language, the sample applications are suitable for a larger target audience, even internationally.

Accompanying information is provided in such a way that it supports the respective exhibition tour as much as possible, but does not interrupt it. “More is always possible”, which is why the nice gallery is also a “laboratory of future developments”. Not only for us. Aspects such as walkways / optimal user navigation, lighting, audio – motion pictures, curation in virtual environments, all promise variety.

Underwater worlds accompany the photographer’s own learning process. From the beginnings with a humble compact camera to colorful wide-angle shots. The fascinating beauty of the seas, meanwhile, offers structure, form and color in all their abstraction.

Details & Start

The images (also) symbolise the photographer’s learning process. The adventure began with the simple compact camera and the driving desire to capture the beauty of the seas. Due to the technical limitations of the cameras and the light absorbing properties of water, the first motifs were mostly close-ups. It was only later – and with better equipment – that colourful wide-angle shots became possible.

Alexander Ostrowitzki, called Liko, is a marine biologist, underwater photographer and diving instructor. While working in the tropics of our world, he spent a total of three months of his life underwater on some 5,500 dives between 2009 and 2020. He took his first steps as an underwater photographer during his divemaster training on Rhodes. As a marine biology dive guide, he has traveled the world, including the Maldives, where he cultivated his photographic craft.

Materialities

The special interplay of materials with the elements of form, color and structure creates a sense of space and a “virtual haptic” that shapes the overall arrangement.

Details & Start

It is about composition, about the interplay of materialities with forms, colors and structures. In combination with lighting effects, a sense of space and a “virtual haptic” are created that shape the overall arrangement in the visitor’s mind.

By choosing exhibits that are different in terms of material, the connection to the formative elements of shape, color and structure is to be made conscious for an exhibition experience that is as authentic as possible. In virtual environments, personal perception about the overall arrangement is closely linked to those aspects, including lighting effects. This sample exhibition can demonstrate whether and how this can be achieved.
